PRIMARY EDUCATION AND TECHNOLOGY

“We need technology in every classroom and in every student and teacher’s hand, because it is the pen and paper of our time, and it is the lens through which we experience much of our world.” – David Warlick

Many Primary school activities engage children in hands-on, dynamic activities that do not require the use of technology, limiting how much time students spend in front of a screen. However, there are ways that technology can develop and sustain unique learning opportunities in schools.

WHY TECHNOLOGY IS NEEDED IN OUR PRIMARY SYSTEM

The world is evolving and so is the educational system. Incorporating technology into the classroom can benefit and support learning and teaching practices. But what makes it so beneficial to the learning experience? How can you incorporate technology into your primary school curriculum?

Read on to know why technology is needed in the classroom.

1. PREPARES STUDENTS FOR THE FUTURE

Technology is everywhere, which is why it’s essential in students’ current learning environment. Using technology when you teach will help students to become more familiar with common programs that they will use in their future careers. Since it will play a large role in their lives moving forward, students need to be able to understand the basics. The use of computers and the internet will be an integral part of their future professional and personal lives.

2. SUPPORTS LEARNING

Some students learn best when they have access to technology. To reach as many students as possible, it’s crucial that technology be incorporated into the schools curriculum.

Technology can offer a variety of teaching and learning techniques that can help teachers convey the subject material to the students. The hope of many teachers is to reach as many students as they can, and technology provides a great solution for them.

3. PROVIDES A MORE ENGAGED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

One important reason why integrating technology in the curriculum is that it helps to create a more engaging learning environment for students. It’s hard to deny the impact of technology on the way we teach and learn. Technology can help teachers to present subjects in more interactive and creative ways. With all the possibilities out there and with more on the way with advancements like virtual reality.

4. PROVIDES A FUN AND ENGAGING LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR STUDENTS

Young scholars today are not only required to learn but they also need to have fun while doing so. Incorporating technology in primary schools offers students the opportunity to have fun while learning, which will also help them stay motivated and excited about their studies.

5. MORE CREATIVITY

Using technology in education increases future career opportunities for students. Students can learn anything. from learning technical skills like programming to humane skills like leadership.

Technology harnesses the students’ ability to be more connected and be more creative.

WAYS TO INTEGRATE TECHNOLOGY INTO THE CLASSROOM

Integration of technology in education refers to the use of technology to enhance the student learning experience. Utilizing different types of technology in the classroom, creates learners who are actively engaged with learning objectives. Technology provides instant accessibility to information, which is why its presence in the classroom is so vital. The implementation of technology also creates pathways for differentiated instruction to meet the unique needs of students as individual learners within a broader classroom environment.

1. EDUCATIONAL GAMES AND QUIZZES

Utilize educational game websites or apps that offer interactive quizzes, puzzles, and challenges related to the subject matter. This engages students in a fun and competitive environment while improving their learning.

2. ONLINE POLLS AND SURVEYS

Use online polling tools or survey platforms to gather student feedback, conduct class surveys, or facilitate class discussions. This encourages active participation and allows students to express their thoughts.

3. TECH-ENABLED STUDENT PRESENTATIONS

Assigning a project that requires the students to use tech to both create and present their final work encourages the real-life application of software and hardware in both research and execution, offering an opportunity to gain comfort with using tech in all aspects of their work. Making this practical instead of theoretical will provide marketable future life skills.

4. ONLINE LESSON REVIEWS

Having an overview of lessons to reference after class allows students to focus more attention on the concepts presented during the class. Plus, any students that miss class can easily learn more about what they missed.

5. VIDEO-BASED LESSONS

Videos are an excellent way to capture students’ attention and deliver content in an easy and understandable way. YouTube and other video-sharing platforms are goldmines when it comes to finding suitable educational content for students of all ages. You can also easily plan whole lessons around videos, discuss them and create work inspired by the video.

Teachers can even encourage students to create their own video projects as an alternative to essays and presentations, and then share them digitally. Students love to engage with video content, and for different types of learners, utilizing videos in the classroom can be essential to their success.

CONCLUSION

As an educationist, it is my duty to integrate and know ways of implementing tools/ resources that would improve teachers’ work and enhance students’ learning.

You may think technology is just a distraction, but it can help encourage active participation in the classroom. Technology develops students’ social skills, research skills and communication skills. The only task of parents and educators is to make children aware of this phenomenal change that is developing the educational system.
